Where Every Tab Tells a Story! Welcome Back, Annotation Lovers!
There’s something undeniably magical about marking that epic battle cry, the first flicker of forbidden magic, or the moment a prophecy begins to unfold, and for fantasy readers, colored tabs are our secret weapon. If you’ve ever flipped back through your favorite book just to relive that plot twist, powerful quote, or emotional reveal, you’re in the right place!
In this month’s blog, we sat down with Caitlyn, the creator behind the everything-fantasy account @caitlyns_romantasy, known for her passion for fantasy novels, tabbed pages, and heartfelt reactions. Whether you’re a seasoned annotator or just starting to explore the world of tabs and highlights, Caitlyn’s story is sure to inspire.
Meet Caitlyn
Caitlyn is a mom of two who carves out reading time and creates fun, engaging content from her little corner of the basement. She began her bookish journey on TikTok in January 2024 and started building a presence on Instagram later that year in November. Since then, she’s become a go-to source for fantasy lovers who adore deep reads, emotional reactions, and yes, gorgeous, color-coded annotations.
How Her Annotation Journey Began
Caitlyn started annotating a few years ago by tabbing quotes that stood out to her. Over time, her system evolved into something more intentional and immersive. These days, she doesn't just mark up a book; she experiences it.
Her System: Tabbing with Intention
Yes, Caitlyn absolutely has a system, and it’s equal parts aesthetic and functional:
- Color Coordination is Key: She starts by choosing 5–7 tab colors that match the book cover (because let’s be honest—it must look good).
- Legend/Key at the Front: She creates a tabbing key at the beginning of the book so each color has a purpose, think world-building, character development, favorite quotes, foreshadowing, romance/spice, and key plot points.
- Read and Tab: As she reads, she tabs away, using the key as her guide.
- Margin Notes for Big Moments: When emotions run high or the plot throws a punch, she scribbles her raw reactions in the margins.
When asked what she loves most about tabbing and annotating, Caitlyn said:
“I love being able to go back and read what I wrote and tabbed to see if I found important things throughout the book.”
So, if you’re intimidated by annotation, don’t be! As Caitlyn shows, it’s not about perfection; it’s about connection.
Romance and... Sanderson?
Caitlyn does tab romance and spicy scenes—when they show up! But she had me laughing when she said:
“I know I don’t need a romance/spice tab when I’m reading Brandon Sanderson.”
And if you know, you know. Sanderson might not bring the steam, but he definitely brings the plot.
Her Most Meaningful Annotations
Caitlyn’s favorite book to annotate so far?
Tempest of Wrath and Vengeance by Melissa K. Roerich
“So much happened plot-wise and romance-wise that I love going back through that one.”
But her most annotated book of all time?
The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
“I used 3 full stacks of each color tab (6 total colors). I’ll always annotate anything by Brandon because there’s so much happening, and the Cosmere is huge. I want to be able to go back and see all the connections.”
So, consider this your friendly PSA: If you’re diving into the Cosmere, bring tabs. Lots of them.
Favorite Genre and Tropes
Caitlyn’s favorite genre is romantasy (romance + fantasy), though she reads across the fantasy spectrum.
Her favorite trope? Slow burn
Bonus micro-trope? Hot springs.
(You either get it, or you’re about to.)
